Monte Serrat<\/strong> It's a neighborhood that's probably not mentioned in tourist guide itineraries. But it certainly deserves to be appreciated, even more so during this pandemic. Therefore, it's worth remembering that this text was published while there is no vaccine against the new coronavirus. So, if you want to visit Monte Serrat or any other place, always wear a mask.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I believe it's possible to follow all the social distancing recommendations from 2020. After all, it's a wide-open, open space. While I was at both the Fort and Ponta do Humait\u00e1, I only saw people gathered with their friends in small numbers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That being said, let's get down to the details.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How to get to Monte Serrat<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The area is undergoing construction. During the ride, I saw that the car had to enter some streets that I didn't immediately recognize. Therefore, if you live in Salvador, I recommend that you take an Uber. I live downtown and set my drop-off point to the fort. The trip there cost R$13. The return trip cost R$22, due to dynamic pricing and my phone having low battery. I decided not to risk waiting for the price to return to normal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Furthermore, I noticed that the bus stop is relatively far away, and it also involves passing through ongoing construction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Details of the Fort<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The neighborhood was founded by Thom\u00e9 de Souza with the aim of defending Salvador against invaders, along with the Santo Ant\u00f4nio Fort in Barra. Furthermore, the neighborhood is named after Our Lady of Montserrat, a Spanish virgin. A plaque from the Brazilian Army provides details about the construction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The reason it was built in this location was because of the calm waters, as well as having a privileged view to combat enemy invasions. In 1925, the Ministry of the Navy took possession. Since 1993 it has housed the Weapons Museum, with various types of weaponry, and has become a tourist attraction. But because of the pandemic, the fort is closed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because it's surrounded by the Bay of All Saints, both the Fort and Ponta do Humait\u00e1 are used as backdrops for bridal and maternity photo shoots. And no wonder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Humait\u00e1 Point<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If there's one place worth taking a stroll and clearing your head, it's this part of Monte Serrat. I don't know if there's any official award, but I think Ponta do Humait\u00e1 is one of the most inspiring places in Salvador. From there, you can see the entire Bay of All Saints from many different angles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On one side, the entire coast, all the way to the Barra Lighthouse. On the other, the entire Itapagipe Peninsula, which includes Monte Serrat itself, Boa Viagem, Bonfim, Ribeira, and other neighborhoods in the region. If you squint, you can even see the factory located in S\u00e3o Tom\u00e9 de Paripe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Furthermore, there you'll find "Salvador's first house." It's the oldest, built in 1619, and houses one of the two restaurants available in the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For food, in addition to the restaurants mentioned, there's acaraj\u00e9, pastel, and some street vendors selling soft drinks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our Lady of Monte Serrat is the church that is part of the area and adds charm to aerial photos. Unfortunately, some graffiti has been found, but it doesn't detract from the importance of the work to the place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And finally, the Humait\u00e1 Lighthouse. It's much smaller than its "siblings," the Barra and Itapu\u00e3 Lighthouses, but it still has an incredible visual impact. While the balustrade, which almost everyone climbs to admire the sunset, was built in 1926, the lighthouse itself was built in 1935 and is the only one that is entirely in the sea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
